Glenorchy Knights’ new VIP lounge named in honour of club legend

Last month the Glenorchy Knights (Croatia) Football Club in Hobart paid tribute to a former life member by naming its new members’ area in his name.

In a special and intimate ceremony at its recently refurbished clubhouse in the Hobart suburb of Glenorchy, the Knights officially named its new VIP members’ section the Michael Furjanić Members’ Lounge.

A former player, president, patron and life member of the club originally known as Croatia Hobart Soccer Club, Furjanić also established the Croatian Soccer Association of Australia (CSAA) in 1974 and was the president of the national body for 15 years. The Glenorchy Knights honoured him for his countless contributions.

The Knights paid tribute to their club legend, who passed away in 2018, in a social media post, following the special event.

A legacy of a great contributions to football and community

“Michael’s contributions to football and community have been acknowledged many times before,” read the club statement.

“In 1989, he was made president for life of the CSAA and in 2015, was inducted into the CSAA Hall of Fame. In 2001, he was also awarded an OAM for his contribution to the Croatian community in Tasmania.

“Many years later, as we finally have a new clubroom, the Glenorchy Knights have the opportunity to also acknowledge Michael’s contributions to our club and our community by naming our new members’ area in his honour,” concluded the statement from the Knights.

On the night, Furjanić’s wife Suellen was given the honour of cutting the ribbon, in the presence of all three of their children, sons Paul and Robert and daughter Anita.

Speaking to the Vjesnik, this week, Anita said her father would have been so pleased that the Glenorchy Knights finally had a permanent clubroom facility at KGV Stadium.

“My father Michael (Mirko) would have been so pleased that the Glenorchy Knights Football Club finally has a home next to their senior pitch at KGV,” explained Anita.

A proud Croatian who called Australia home

“He always said that football brought everyone together – no matter their nationality. He was a proud Croatian who called Australia home,” continued Furjanić’s daughter, who is also currently the Knights’ club treasurer. The Glenorchy Knights honour him with this dedication.

“Our family is deeply honoured to have a members’ lounge in his name that has special photos and memorabilia celebrating those associated with the Glenorchy Knights over the years,” she said.

“Many thanks to the current committee and volunteers who designed and created this space for members to enjoy.

“As I said on the night, Dad was the best at selling raffle tickets and memberships, so it’s a very fitting name!” concluded Anita Furjanić.
