Luka Modrić has officially become an owner of English Championship club Swansea.
The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner has been unveiled as a minority stake in the Welsh club, with Modrić confirming the news via Swansea’s social media channels.
The move is not expected to impact the midfielder’s status at Real Madrid, where he continues to play a key role for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
“Hi Swansea fans. I’m Luke Modrić and I’m excited to be part of the journey,” Modrić said on a video posted on the Swans’ social media accounts.
He added: “This is an exciting opportunity. Swansea has a strong identity, an incredible fanbase, and the ambition to compete at the highest level.”
“Playing at the highest level, I believe I can provide my experience to the club. My goal is to support the club’s growth in a positive way and to help to build an exciting future.”
Swansea CEO Tom Gorringe was elated with the news.
“I am excited that Luka has come on board as an investor and co-owner. There is no better role model in the game for our players, from the academy right through to the first team,” Gorringe said.
“His endorsement of our ambition and willingness to support us on our journey will be instrumental as we aim to continue to improve our results on and off the pitch.
“In our conversations, he has demonstrated his passion for the club, his knowledge of how we are performing, and a genuine passion to help us improve.
“I am really looking forward to working with him more closely to drive us forward.”
It is believed that Modrić, whose Real Madrid contract expires at the end of the season, is likely to remain at the Santiago Bernebeu next season, leading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup in USA, Canada and Mexico.
It is not clear what percentage the former Dinamo Zagreb and Tottenham Hotspur star would acquire.
However it is believed that he would join the current ownership cohort, led by US businessman Andy Coleman.
Coleman, who built one of the world’s leading hospitality industry finance businesses, is also part owner of MLS club DC United.
He has vowed to return Swansea to the Premier League for the first time since 2018, after leading a takeover from Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan last November.
“I’m a dreamer by nature, we all want to get back to the Premier League, but we want to get there in the right way so that we can sustain that when we get there,” Coleman said when buying Swansea.
“We want to build a sustainable football club that eliminates a lot of the risks of the ever-changing economics of football.”
Swansea are currently mid-table ion the Championship.
WALES’ CELEBRITY INVESTORS
Celebrity investors are all the rage in Wales.
Wrexham, who are co-owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are pushing for promotion from League One.
Cardiff City are currently third last in the Championship, and should they avoid relegation, there could be three Welsh clubs in England’s second tier next season.
Modrić, 39, is on track to feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and remains captain of the Croatian national team.
He had a decorated English career, spending four seasons with Tottenham, after signing from Dinamo in 2008.
The Croatian Icon is back in action with club Real Madrid in their do or die Champions League Quarter final, looking to overturn a 3 goal deficit. They would become the fourth ever team to come back from 3 goals down in the knockout stages of the prestigious tournament.
