Why are more and more foreigners moving to Croatia? Here’s what they themselves say

by Marko Barišić: Discover Why Croatia is Becoming a Top Choice for Foreigners’ Relocation

Croatia’s safety, Mediterranean climate, and relaxed lifestyle are attracting growing numbers of foreigners, from digital nomads to families. Social media buzz highlights traditions like leisurely coffee culture and self-service honesty stalls. Explore why expats from the US, Australia, and beyond now call Croatia home—valuing its security, community, and idyllic Adriatic charm.

A Rising Trend: Expats and Digital Nomads Flock to Croatia

Recently, it has become noticeable that not only are Croatian expatriates and their descendants returning to Croatia, but an increasing number of foreigners are also settling here. Previously, many came as representatives of foreign companies, while others arrived during the pandemic due to Croatia’s more relaxed lifestyle compared to their home countries.

Later came digital nomads. Some moved because they found love in Croatia and stayed. Though precise statistics are still lacking, it is clear that more people are choosing Croatia not just for work, marriage, or the pandemic… but because it is a deliberate, planned choice among foreigners.

Diverse Origins, Shared Experiences

Most newcomers are from Western Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, and South America. This new generation communicates via social media, often sharing their impressions online. This keeps them connected to their origins while bonding with their new home.

Safety and Serenity: A Californian’s Story in Split

One such example is Sarah, who moved from California to Split with her two children. Her TikTok is filled with videos about life in this Croatian city. She cites safety as a key reason for her move and decision to stay.

In Split, she says, you don’t have to fear being ambushed or robbed. There’s no worry about her or her children being abducted… She can freely walk alone at night. No one “stares” at her, as was the case in Santa Barbara, California, where she previously lived among other foreigners.

She also appreciates the climate, with its mild winters. Clearly entrepreneurial, she has bought several apartments in Split and begun renovating them. Gradually, she explains, she fell in love with the city.

Croatian Coffee Culture: A Social Ritual

Brazilian Ramalho also shares videos about Croatia on TikTok. She, too, expresses enthusiasm, often commenting on Croatian customs and daily habits. Recently, she highlighted coffee culture here as a social ritual, noting that it’s enjoyed more leisurely than in other countries.

But what struck her most was this: “It’s actually pretty incredible that you can calmly drink your coffee, leave money on the table, and simply walk away—without worrying someone will take it,” Ramalho said. Her followers explained this is common in Croatia, though they warned her against trying it in peak tourist season because of the presence of many foreigners.

Honesty Stalls: Trust in Tradition

Others pointed out another custom: “Wait until you see roadside stalls in villages, where fruit and vegetables are left with a price and a money box—untouched.” People stop their cars, read the self-service sign, weigh what they want, drop money in the box, and leave. The stall owner is often tending a greenhouse or field nearby.

A Privileged Lifestyle: Why Croatia Wins Hearts

This, they concluded, is a privilege tied to Croatia’s relaxed environment, sense of safety, and traditions like long coffees with friends and family. Clearly, this resonates with the many foreigners who now call Croatia home—and they deeply value it.
