Two Galićs and two league titles on two continents

While Bianca Galić was last weekend leading her Central Coast Mariners team to an Australian women’s football league title, another Aussie Croat female footballer Daniela Galić was creating history with FC Twente and securing the Dutch treble.

Croatian Women’s National team representative Bianca Galić scored the winning goal in a heart stopping penalty shootout to lead the Central Coast Mariners to victory in the A League Women’s Grand Final against Melbourne Victory last Sunday.

It was an incredible moment for the talented 26 year old Sydney born Australian Croatian footballer in front 6,568 spectators at Melbourne’s AAMI Park.

Galić was instrumental in winning the ball, which eventually led to the Mariners’ goal in the 46th minute by Isabel Gomez.

Scoring the Winning Penalty

With the scores locked at 1-1 after full time – and following two periods of extra time – the Croatian international ended the match as captain and scored the winning penalty for the Mariners.

Grand Final hero Bianca Galic heads to Croatia this week for her next mission…

This sparked wild and frenzied celebrations for Galić’s team which just two years ago didn’t even exist as part of the Mariners setup.

Nonetheless, there was only a small opportunity to celebrate the spoils of Grand Final victory against the Victory as Galić heads to Croatia for her next mission.

She is set to play in two UEFA Nations’ League fixtures for the Croatian women’s national team in an away clash against the Czech Republic later this month (May 31), followed by a showdown at home with Ukraine (June 4).

Another Galić in the news…

Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe in Europe, another Galić was a squad member of her side’s championship conquering side.

Also born in Sydney and with the same surname as Bianca – but no relation – Australian Croatian footballer Daniela Galić’s Dutch team FC Twente created history by being the first women’s team to take out the Dutch treble in a single season.

According to Matildas.com.au, FC Twente completed a domestic treble in dramatic circumstances, coming from two goals down to defeat AZ Alkmaar 3-2 and win the league over PSV on goal difference. Daniela Galić was an unused substitute in last weekend’s match.

This is the 18 year old midfielder’s first season in Holland after departing A League outfit Melbourne City at the end of last season.

The Dutch triumph has capped off an incredible 12 month period for the teenager, after making her Matilda’s debut in a 1-1 draw against Switzerland last October.

She has since gone on to make five appearances at senior international level.
