Organised by the Croatian Club King Tom in Sydney, a festive picnic was held on Sunday, 25 May. This marked the occasion of the Croatian Statehood Day celebrations.

The celebration commenced with Sunday Mass, celebrated by Fra Klaudio Milohanović. Afterwards, guests gathered in the club hall, where the cultural and musical programme began. Members of the group Sto na Sat and Darko Zorić performed the Australian and Croatian national anthems. This was followed by a moment of silence to honour all those who gave their lives for the homeland during Statehood Day.

Consul General Glasnović and Ambassador Pavelich honour veterans and Croatian unity

The gathering was addressed by the Consul General of the Republic of Croatia in Sydney, Mr Ivica Glasnović. In his speech, he congratulated everyone on the occasion of Statehood Day. He emphasised the importance of Croatian unity, which Croatian Statehood Day signifies. Mr Glasnović highlighted the historic role of Croatia’s first president, Dr Franjo Tuđman, the Croatian war veterans, and all those who contributed to creating a free and independent Croatia. Additionally, he extended his gratitude to the event organisers, the President of the Club Mr Tomislav Lerotić, Fra Klaudio Milohanović, and Croatian Ambassador Betty Pavelich.

Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to Australia, H.E. Betty Pavelich, also addressed the attendees. She congratulated them on the 35th anniversary of Statehood Day. This year’s Croatian Statehood Day is particularly significant. It marks 30 years since the military operations Bljesak and Oluja — pivotal moments in Croatia’s recent history.

In her speech, she emphasised the vital role played by the Croatian community, the Church, and the diaspora in the struggle for Croatian independence. She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to all Croatian war veterans.
