Honouring Love, Legacy and Tradition: Mother’s Day Celebrations Across the Croatian Community in Australia

By Suzana Fantov

Across Australia, Croatian communities came together in early May to celebrate one of the most cherished days of the year — Mother’s Day. From Sydney to Adelaide, Melbourne to Springvale, halls were filled with song, laughter, and heartfelt tributes to the women who shape families, nurture tradition, and form the backbone of community life.

Each event, unique in its own setting and style, shared a common thread — gratitude. From high teas and folkloric performances to vibrant zabave and heartfelt speeches, the Croatian spirit of togetherness and honouring generational love was on full display. Dedicated volunteers, performers, and organisers worked tirelessly to ensure mothers and grandmothers felt celebrated and appreciated.

With music, flowers, delicious food, and warm words, these gatherings reflected not only the deep respect for mothers but also the enduring values that bind Croatian families across the generations — love, dedication, and community pride.

We were able to collect beautiful photos capturing some of the Mother’s Day celebrations held in Croatian centres that we managed to reach.

On Sunday, 11 May, the Croatian Sports Centre in Adelaide was filled with joy, laughter, and heartfelt appreciation. The community came together for a special Mother’s Day Luncheon.

The event honoured mothers of all generations, bringing together families, friends, and members of the centre for an unforgettable celebration.

The beautifully decorated hall, adorned with colourful flowers and festive touches, set the tone for a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Every table was surrounded by smiling faces — from the youngest children to long-time members of the centre. Everyone enjoyed a day of gratitude and reflection.

Guests were treated to a lavish buffet lunch, featuring a delicious selection of dishes that catered to all tastes. From traditional Croatian specialities to modern favourites, the spread reflected the centre’s commitment to hospitality and community spirit.

Adding to the celebratory mood was the enchanting live music of Damir Romanik. His heartfelt guitar melodies provided the perfect soundtrack to a day filled with emotion and connection.

As President of the Croatian Sports Centre, I am proud of the strong resilient women in our community. Not only do they support the CSC, they raise families and are devoted to their community. They are passionate about keeping the traditions of celebration alive. We are all moms in the CSC kitchen and functions crew.

I work full time outside of the CSC and, as president, have devoted my time to the CSC full time. We care about our elderly to ensure they have a place to enjoy the company of others. Our team works hard to make the day special for everyone. We are grateful to have the support of the families.

They support us in many ways by attending in huge numbers. We always sell out for Mother’s Day. It was a very special day for us all. We put so much pride in what we do and do the very best for our patrons. We are a very dedicated team of volunteers.” with great pride and respect, the President of the Centre, Juli Čirjak, expressed her gratitude.

The Mother’s Day Luncheon was more than just a meal — it was a tribute to the women who have shaped families, supported communities, and passed on traditions. The event reminded everyone of the importance of togetherness. It highlighted the special place mothers hold in every Croatian household.

As guests lingered long after lunch had ended, exchanging stories and laughter, it was clear that this celebration had once again brought the community closer. This closeness is just as a mother’s love always does.
