Laughter, music, and the delicious aroma of homemade food always fill the space. This happens whenever members of this vibrant seniors’ group gather at the Gladstone Park Senior Citizens Centre.
Following their recent Mother’s Day celebration, this group of active retirees also organised a trip to South Australia’s scenic Mount Gambier.
A Young Club With a Big Heart
Although the Croatian Pensioners’ Club at Gladstone Park is still young, it’s growing steadily. This growth is thanks to a passionate group of organisers and volunteers. Their mission is simple: create a space where seniors can enjoy each other’s company, stay active, and celebrate their shared heritage.
“Dear friends, if you’re looking for warm social gatherings, tasty homemade meals, and fun activities like bocce — you’ll find it all here in our club,” says one of the club’s organisers. “We may be a young club, but we work hard to make each gathering even better for our members. Just join us once — you won’t regret it!” – The members invite you to their gathering.
The club meets every Wednesday from 2:00 PM, with a delicious dinner served at 6:00 PM. And everyone is welcome.
Why Socialising Matters
As people age, social isolation can become a serious issue. For many seniors, especially those from migrant backgrounds, community centres like this one offer much more than entertainment. They provide a vital lifeline of companionship, familiarity, and emotional support.
At events like the Mother’s Day celebration, Christmas or Easter celebrations, seniors can reconnect with their roots. They speak their language, and share laughter and stories in an environment that feels like home.
“It’s not just about the food or the games — it’s about the feeling of belonging,” said Marija, a longtime member. “We come alive when we’re together.”
