Croatian Club Adelaide’s remarkable 75-year story

75 Years of the Croatian Club Adelaide: Honouring a proud community legacy

by Jana Adžić – On Saturday, 26 April 2025, the Croatian Club Adelaide marked a major milestone—75 years since its founding—with a sold-out Gala Ball that brought together generations of the Croatian community. Founded on 25 April 1950, the Club stands as one of the earliest and most enduring expressions of Croatian identity in Australia.

What began as the dream of a handful of Croatian immigrants became a cornerstone of community life in South Australia. Those early founders didn’t just establish a club, they built a second home. A place where culture, language, faith, and identity could thrive, no matter how far from the homeland. As the first Croatian Club in Australia, their work laid the foundations for countless other community initiatives across the state and beyond.

A community built with heart (1950s–1970s)

In its formative years, the Club’s members rolled up their sleeves, raising funds, renovating an old Salvation Army hall in Bowden, and eventually building the current premises in Brompton. But their contributions went well beyond construction. They nurtured a vibrant and inclusive space for future generations.

Key milestones from this era include the establishment of the Adelaide Croatia Soccer Club (1952), the Croatian folklore ensemble (1951), and the Croatian Ethnic School (1966), Australia’s oldest Croatian-language school still operating today. The women’s group, Hrvatska Žena Katarina Zrinski, was founded in 1974, playing an especially vital role during the Croatian Homeland War.

Preserving culture, expressing identity

The Club quickly became a beacon of cultural life, hosting traditional dance, language classes, and national celebrations. HFS Lenek, now the largest Croatian folklore group in Australia, traces its roots back to 1951 and continues to perform to packed audiences around the country. The soccer club not only achieved sporting success but also became one of the earliest in South Australia to welcome Indigenous players, including the legendary Charles Perkins.

Meanwhile, the Croatian Ethnic School remains a vital institution for preserving language and heritage, especially through cherished events like Mother’s Day performances and St. Nicholas Day festivities.

When Croatia called, we answered

During the Homeland War, the Adelaide Croatian community rallied in force, organising peaceful demonstrations, raising awareness, and sending aid back home. The Women’s Auxiliary raised much-needed funds and humanitarian support through tireless fundraising. When international recognition of Croatian independence was finally achieved, the celebrations at the Club were unforgettable.

A Gala to remember

This year’s 75th Anniversary Gala Ball was a proud and emotional night. Organised by second, third, and fourth-generation Croatian Australians, the event welcomed notable dignitaries including the Governor of South Australia and representatives from the state government and parliament.

Attendees enjoyed performances by HFS Lenek, heartfelt speeches, a tribute to long-time volunteers, and live music that carried the celebration into the early morning hours. Special acknowledgment was given to the many individuals, past and present, who’ve kept the Club thriving across decades.

While many have contributed to the Club’s success, formal recognition was given to Life Members, those whose long-standing commitment and service helped shape the Club into what it is today.

Looking ahead – Croatian History Festival 2025

The Gala also marked the official beginning of the Croatian History Festival Adelaide 2025, which will run throughout the year. The program will include exhibitions, oral history projects, community heritage tours, and a special commemorative publication.

An historical exhibition, opened during the Gala, will remain on public display at the Club until Sunday 15 June, following the official 75th Anniversary Lunch.

A legacy that lives on

The Croatian Club Adelaide is more than just a building. It’s a living symbol of community, resilience, and heritage. Its walls carry the echoes of laughter, language, and legacy. Seventy-five years on, it stands as proudly as ever, ready to welcome the generations still to come.
