Former Warriors flying high as Croatian trio shine for Geelong Seagulls

Three former North Geelong Warriors have taken an unexpected leap from soccer to Aussie rules—earning a shock senior call-up for the Geelong-based North Shore Seagulls. Croatian trio Daniel and Mark Gudasić, along with mate Mitchell Stošić, have turned heads in the reserves, proving that raw talent, athleticism, and a bit of Croatian grit go a long way.

Three former North Geelong Warriors switch codes with stunning success

A trio of ex-North Geelong Warriors juniors are set to make their senior football debut for North Shore this weekend in the Geelong Football League (GFL). Daniel Gudasić (24), his younger brother Mark (22), and close friend Mitchell Stošić (22) have transitioned from soccer to Aussie rules with remarkable impact—despite only taking up the sport earlier this year. The talented Croatian trio has adapted quickly to football.

From the pitch to the oval: a bold code switch

All three spent much of their junior sporting years with North Geelong Warriors before deciding to try their hand at Australian rules football in 2025. After just four matches in the reserves, their performances were so outstanding that they’ve been fast-tracked into the Seagulls’ senior squad.

In each of their first four games, the Croatian trio have featured in the “best on ground” list, an achievement that quickly caught the attention of senior selectors.

“Just here for a kick” – now seniors

Frank and Suzi Gudasić, proud parents of Daniel and Mark, are beaming with pride. Avid Geelong Cats supporters, the couple will be sporting blue and yellow scarves tomorrow instead, cheering their sons on against the Colac Tigers.

“It took us all by surprise,” said dad Frank. “They just came here to have a bit of fun and a kick, and next thing you know, they’re on the senior list.” Their journey is a testament to the Croatian trio’s determination and potential.

Croatian sporting blood on full display

The trio’s meteoric rise has turned heads across the GFL. In a recent reserves clash, North Shore had managed just 4 points by three-quarter time. With little to lose, the coach threw all three Croatians “on the ball” for the final quarter—and the result was electric.

The Seagulls kicked six goals in the last term alone. Mitch dominated in the ruck, Daniel slotted the first, and Mark capped it off with a blistering burst from the pack, finishing on the run with what many are calling a “goal of the year” contender.

While the side still fell short on the scoreboard, the late surge was a clear sign of the trio’s potential—and a glimpse of what’s to come.

A much-needed lift for struggling Seagulls

North Shore has endured a tough season, recording just one win from nine rounds and suffering several heavy losses. But the inclusion of Daniel, Mark, and Mitch may well be the injection of energy and talent the senior side desperately needs. The Croatian trio might just be the spark the team needs to turn their fortunes around.

To think—none of the three had ever played competitive footy before this year.

What’s next?

All eyes will be on the boys as they make their senior debut tomorrow, 28 June, at Windsor Park in Norlane, with the first bounce at 2:10 PM. With a mix of raw talent, athleticism, and undeniable passion, they could well inspire more young Croatians to follow in their footsteps—on the oval instead of the pitch. The journey of this Croatian trio could very well pave the way for future talents.
