Osijek beach escape: Slavonia’s very own Copacabana

Discover the vibrant riverside beach in Osijek where summer in Slavonia rivals the coast. It is complete with sand, swimming, and sunset parties.

Slavonia’s hidden summer paradise

Every so often we bring stories from Croatia’s Adriatic coast — its stunning beaches, island gems, historic stone towns, and dramatic waterfalls. However, rarely do we feature the gems tucked away in the heart of the country.

Today, we head inland to Slavonia — and to a beach that holds fond childhood memories for many. Whether it was a pit stop on the long drive to the sea or a full summer escape, Osijek’s “Copacabana” on the Baranja side of the Drava River is a beloved spot.

Final touches before the summer splash

River swimming season starts a bit later than along the coast, and in Osijek, the finishing touches are underway. Over 1,000 cubic metres of sand are being added. This replaces what was swept away by high water. It is ready to welcome swimmers once more.

“We’ve begun adding sand along the Drava bank at Copacabana. A process we’ve continued annually since 2021,” said Osijek Mayor Ivan Radić on Tuesday. He added, “We’re expecting a great turnout, beautiful scenes, and a lively beach like in past years. This is hands down the most beautiful riverbank with the finest view of the finest city.”

Pool complex already packed

Works are set to finish by Friday, so river swimming can kick off this weekend. Meanwhile, the adjoining pool complex officially opened on 15 June. It was instantly packed, especially with children under seven, who enter for free.

It’s worth noting that a major pool renovation was completed in 2022. It gives Osijek an Olympic-size pool, water attractions, and an upgraded filtration system. This helps protect the Drava River’s ecosystem.

Major investment and greener spaces coming

Radić also announced that public procurement is underway for the second phase of Copacabana’s redevelopment, worth €7.4 million. €4 million of which comes from EU funds. Work will commence after this year’s swimming season. It includes planting numerous trees and shrubs to green the area and offer shade along with sunshine.

A coastal vibe in the heart of Osijek

In just a few weeks, Osijek will feel like a seaside city — thanks to the wide Drava and its buzzing riverside vibe. Copacabana becomes packed with people escaping the heat in its long stretch of water and sand.

Rescue services operate daily, and the beach is cleaned each morning. This welcomes locals who treat it like a second living room. You’ll see pedal boats gliding by, games of picigin splashing about, windsurfing, and small boats cruising just far enough from the swimmers.

Food, fun, and summer nights

There are food and drink stands for refreshments. On the opposite riverbank, old boats converted into restaurants and cafés offer relaxed waterfront dining. As with any popular gathering place, it’s also a place to see and be seen. When the sun goes down, the beach area transforms into a hotspot for music and youth nightlife. Truly beautiful.
