Gold Coast Knights’ hopes of another famous Australia Cup upset were dashed on Tuesday
night, as A-League Premiers Auckland FC proved too strong in a 4-0 win at the Gold Coast
Croatia Sports Centre.
In front of a crowd of over 1500 passionate supporters, the club hosted one of the most
high-profile matches in its history. The night promised excitement, but Auckland silenced the crowd early.
Just 33 seconds into the game, the visitors took the lead in cruel fashion. A deep cross from Hiroki Sakai found winger Jesse Randall, whose header struck the post before rebounding off goalkeeper Casey Went and into the net. It was a brutal way to concede so early, especially on a night filled with so much anticipation.

The Knights tried to settle, but Auckland quickly found their rhythm. In the 19th minute, Randall again broke free down the left, picking up a blocked shot and cutting it back to Logan Rogerson. His first-time strike took a deflection and found the back of the net, doubling the visitors’ lead.
Before the break, the reigning A-League Premiers made it three. After a ball from Francis De Vries caused chaos in the box, the Knights couldn’t clear their lines. Guillermo May pounced on the loose ball and rifled it home to make it 3-0 by halftime.
But the Knights weren’t finished. After regrouping at the break, they came out with renewed purpose. Max Brown came closest to pulling one back when his curling free kick rattled the crossbar, and minutes later he forced Auckland goalkeeper Michael Woud into a diving save from range.

Despite those bright moments, Auckland added a fourth in the 70th minute. Substitute Liam Gillion curled a shot from the edge of the box past Went to seal the result.
While the scoreboard told one story, the Knights’ fight and character across the park pushed Auckland all the way to the final whistle.
The result ends the Knights’ 2025 Australia Cup run at the Round of 32, but the occasion itself was a huge moment for the club and its community.
With the Cup now behind them, the focus returns to their NPL Queensland season where a
local derby awaits. The Knights sit fourth on the ladder, just one point ahead of Gold Coast
United in fifth, setting up a crucial clash this Saturday at Coplick Family Sports Park.
