Why so many Aussie Croats are finally learning the language

From Sydney to Melbourne, a growing number of Australians are taking up Croatian – and not just for the love of ćevapi.

Whether it’s reconnecting with family heritage, falling in love with a Croatian partner, or planning a trip to the Dalmatian coast, interest is growing.

Australia’s Croatian community is one of the most established in the world, with migration waves dating back to the 1850s.

For younger generations and curious learners alike, the language is a bridge to identity, culture, and connection.

So, why now?

  1. Heritage – Second and third generation Croatian-Australians are increasingly embracing their roots.

Growing up speaking/understanding the language is one thing, but learning grammar through reading and writing is a different ball park.
  2. Global rise – From World Cup football fame to tourism buzz, Croatia is everywhere.

As more Aussies travel there or fall in love with someone who has Croatian ties, the incentive to speak the language grows.
  3. Social Media – Increasing popularity around social media the last few years also means increasing popularity around Croatian influencers.

This includes travel vloggers showing off Hvar sunsets and Split’s old town, making the language and lifestyle feel aspirational and cool.

How to get started:

Language apps:

  • Mondly: Provides a step-by-step approach with essential vocabulary, sentence formation, and real-life conversation practice.
  • Pimsleur: Focuses on spoken Croatian through audio-based lessons, prioritizing practical, real-world communication skills.
  • Simply Learn Croatian: A travel-friendly phrasebook app offering essential vocabulary and common phrases for tourists and beginners.

Community language classes:

The Australian Croatian Community Services (ACCS) offers structured Croatian language classes for adults across Victoria, providing a welcoming environment for learners of all levels.

  • Typically three semesters per year.
  • Small classes to ensure personalised attention and a supportive learning environment.
  • Flexible delivery based on varying class times, as well as both in person and zoom classes offered.
  • Comprehensive materials utilised such as the “Učimo Hrvatski” textbook series by Vesna Kosovac and Vida Lukić, covering beginner to advanced levels.

Absorb Croatian Media:

Listening to Croatian music, Croatian social media influencers, or even Croatian kids cartoons on Youtube will help with language skill development.

Listening to real conversations is key – follow Croatian influencers, musicians, or comedians on Instagram and TikTok to develop your ear for the language.
