Celebrating Victory Day in Australia

Every year on the 5th of August, Croatian communities around the world commemorate “Dan Pobjede” (Victory Day). The date marks the liberation of Knin during “Oluja” (Operation Storm) in 1995, a pivotal moment that helped secure Croatia’s independence in the Homeland War.

This year marks 30 years since Operation Storm, a milestone that has sparked a wave of celebratory events in Croatian communities across Australia.

Faith and Remembrance

For many, the day does not begin as a celebration but as a reminder of those who have passed. Most Croatian Churches will hold masses and prayer services, where people gather to honour the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for Croatia’s freedom.

This year Sydney will host two special remembrance events. The Knights of the Precious Blood are hosting a solemn Men’s Mass, including Confession, Rosary and a gathering after mass (5.08).

The following weekend there is a commemorative mass and flag raising at St Nikola Tavelic Church (St John’s Park, NSW) (10.08).

Celebrations

Across the country, Croatian clubs will be celebrating in different ways, blending patriotism with community.

Canberra Deakin Soccer Club are hosting a Zabava, with performances by Folkloric Ensembele Vukovar and music by Prva Liga, after sharing dinner and dessert (9.08).

WA’s Croatian Community Centre will also host a special night titled “Ako ne znaš šta je bilo” with folklore by HFG Zagreb, and two special guests from Croatia: Zoran Maras, Honorary President of the Association of Special Police, and Siniša Troha, President of the Croatian Guard Brigades Union (9.08).

The Concord is hosting a family-friendly picnic, with market stalls, live music, kids rides and activities, and folklore dancing (3.08).

Meanwhile, in Adelaide, the Croatian Club is keeping it simple and classic with a Victory Day dinner (8.08) similar to Australian Croatian Club in O’Connor (ACT) offering a Friday night dinner with live music by DJ KT and Stevie T (8.08).

Over in Geelong, locals can enjoy a relaxed lunch with live music and entertainment at the Dom (3.08).

Football

In Sydney, Dan Pobjede finds its way onto the pitch. Sydney United vs. Blacktown City match kicks off at 3PM, with celebrations at King Tom Club surrounding the match. Fans can enjoy a sit-down lunch, raffles, live music from Prva Liga, Sto Na Sat, and Mato, food and market stalls, and cultural performances (10.08).

While each event is unique, they all share the tradition of remembering the heroes of 1995 and celebrating the beauty of Croatian Culture. Thirty years after Operation Storm, Croatian Australians continue to honour their heritage with pride and passion.
