Top hikes in Croatia with views worth the climb

Croatia’s gorgeous landscapes are best explored on foot, and often from above. Whether you’re after views of the sea, lush forests or canyons, there’s a hike for every interest and fitness level.

With trails across the country, don’t forget to pack your hiking shoes for an unforgettable adventure.

1. Srđ, Dubrovnik

Located on the edge of the Old Town, Mount Srđ is a short but rewarding hike. The trail begins just outside the Old Town and takes about an hour to reach the top of the mount of 412m.

Up the top is a picturesque view over Dubrovnik’s City walls and the Elafiti islands, as well as a large white stone cross and Fort Imperial, which you can explore.

Length: 5.8km

Tip: If you get tired, you can take the cable car back down.

2. Plitvice Lakes National Park

While most visitors stick to the wooden walkways around Plitvice’s famous waterfalls, there are also a variety of trails for different difficulty and fitness levels that offer more elevation and even better views. The UNESCO Heritage Site has routes that take you through quiet forest paths, past hidden lakes and peaceful lookout points, to escape the crowds.

It is a perfect way to experience the natural beauty of Croatia’s inland landscapes.

Length: 3.5-16.5 km

Tip: Make sure to wear appropriate footwear, trails are often very slippery.

3. Učka Nature Park: Vojak Peak Trail

Located on the eastern coast of the Istrian peninsula, Učka’s highest point, Vojak (1,401 m), is surprisingly approachable. While there are many trails to accommodate different hikers, the Vojak Peak Trail takes around 90 minutes to complete.

The trail rises through beech forests before opening up to a 360-degree lookout tower. On a clear day you can see from Venice to the Bay of Kvarner, making this one of the most panoramic short hikes in the country.

Length: 7km

Tip: For the adventurous, mountain cycling and rock climbing are also available here.

4. Paklenica National Park: Velika Paklenica Canyon Walk

Often visited by rock climbers, Paklenica also offers a user-friendly canyon walk for those who want to walk between the towering cliffs.

The trail follows a stream toward the mountain hut at Lugarnica. The gorgeous adventure has plenty of shade for those hot days, and is a great opportunity to enjoy the canyon’s natural beauty, including waterfalls and pools.

Length: 6km

Fun fact: This landscape doubled as the American West in early Hollywood films, most notably the Winnetou series.

5. Marjan Hill, Split

Marjan Hill is one of Split’s must-visit attractions, located near the Old Town. The 178-metre hill is part of a protected forest park known for its scenic viewpoints, ruins, and peaceful hiking trails.

The main climb takes around 30 minutes, but several routes offer longer and more adventurous walks. Along the way, expect to see historic stone churches, old cave dwellings, the white stone cross, while enjoying panoramic views of Split’s coastline and Old Town.

Length: 3.2 km

Tip: Pack your swimmers, and head to the nearby beach to cool off after your hike.

Whether you’re island-hopping or heading inland, be sure to pack your walking shoes to see some of Croatia’s best views after a short climb.
