Most Popular Photography Locations in Croatia

Croatia abounds with spectacular locations that offer unlimited photography opportunities. From medieval cities to untouched nature, this country provides diverse subjects for all photography enthusiasts.

The Maiden with the Seagull in Opatija

This famous statue from 1956, a work by sculptor Zvonko Car, has become a symbol of Opatija and the entire Liburnian region. The statue is located on the Lungomare promenade and offers numerous photography opportunities – from close-up portraits of the statue to compositions with the backdrop of Kvarner Bay. The most beautiful photographs are taken at sunset when the statue stands out in silhouette against the coloured sky.

The Greeting to the Sun in Zadar

These installations are a holiday for all your senses.https://www.zadar.hr/en/experience/history-culture/sea-organ-sun-salutation

This unique installation by architect Nikola Bašić consists of 300 multi-layered glass panels arranged in a circle with a diameter of 22 metres. During the day, the panels accumulate solar energy, and in the evening they create a spectacular light show. The best time to photograph is 30 minutes before and after sunset when natural and artificial lighting combine. The combination with the nearby “Sea Organ” creates an additional dimension of sound.

Dubrovnik City Walls

Dubrovnik, known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic”, with its impressive walls from the 13th-17th centuries, creates the perfect backdrop for photography. The walls, stretching 1,940 metres, offer unique views of the old town with its red roofs, crystal-clear Adriatic Sea, and the nearby island of Lokrum. The best time for photography is early morning (7-9 AM) when the walls are less crowded and golden light creates a magical atmosphere. Photography is recommended from different points – from Fort Minčeta for panoramic shots to Ploče Gate for dramatic compositions.

Biokovo Skywalk (Heavenly Walkway)

Skywalk Biokovo at 1,228 metres above sea level is one of the most spectacular photography locations in Croatia. This glass horseshoe-shaped viewpoint extends 11 metres beyond the cliff face and provides breathtaking views of the Makarska Riviera, the islands of Brač and Hvar, and the entire Dalmatian coast. The best conditions for photography are in the morning and late afternoon when the light is softer, and sunset shots are particularly effective when the sky takes on golden-orange tones.

This viewpoint in Mljet National Park at 253 metres above sea level offers panoramic views of the Great Lake, Small Lake, and the islet of St. Mary with its 12th-century Benedictine monastery. Photographs taken during sunset are particularly effective when the lakes are bathed in golden light. Using wide-angle lenses is recommended to capture the entire panorama.

This natural phenomenon – a salt lake connected to the sea by underground channels – is located in Telašćica Nature Park. Dragon’s Eye is 90 metres deep and has a unique turquoise colour that creates an incredible contrast with the surrounding white cliffs. It’s best photographed from the viewpoint at the top of the cliff, from where the perfect circular shape of the lake is visible. A midday visit is recommended when the sun best illuminates the water and emphasises its colour.

Night photographs are also popular when the rock is illuminated, creating a romantic atmosphere.

Steps in Mali Lošinj

These picturesque steps climbing through Mediterranean vegetation towards the hilltop have become an Instagram sensation. The steps offer various compositions – from dramatic downward perspectives to romantic frames that disappear into the greenery. The best time to photograph is in the late afternoon when soft light filters through the foliage, creating a play of light and shadow.

The River Zrmanja, with its 69-kilometre course through deep canyons, creates some of the most spectacular natural landscapes in Croatia. Particularly attractive are the Veliki and Mali Buk waterfalls and the river’s meandering through limestone cliffs. The most beautiful photographs are taken from viewpoints above the canyon, from where the entire river course is visible. Spring and autumn are ideal seasons due to the richer colours of vegetation.
