ROUND 4: Melbourne Knights Fall to Dominant Cannons in 3-0 Defeat

Zoran Juraj SABLJAK

Melbourne Knights suffered a comprehensive 3-0 defeat against Oakleigh Cannons in Friday night’s clash at Jack Edwards Reserve, leaving them searching for answers ahead of next weekend’s home fixture.

The Cannons established their dominance early, with Joe Guest proving to be the catalyst for the home side’s impressive performance. Guest opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a superb free kick that beat the Knights’ wall and gave goalkeeper Oldfield no chance as he dove to his left.

Guest wasn’t finished there, doubling Oakleigh’s advantage in the 37th minute to give the Cannons a commanding lead heading into the half-time break. The first half was entirely controlled by Oakleigh, who dictated play and kept the Knights on the back foot throughout.

While Melbourne Knights showed more intent after the restart, attempting to find a way back into the match, the Cannons maintained their control over proceedings. Any hopes of a Knights comeback were extinguished deep into added time when a defensive error allowed Oakleigh to capitalize and add a third goal, completing the 3-0 rout.

The Knights will look to bounce back this Sunday, March 9th, when they return to home soil to host Port Melbourne Sharks. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
