Each year, the Croatian community in Brisbane proudly honours its roots through the much-loved annual event, Seljačka zabava. This is a joyful celebration of tradition, culture, and community spirit.

Organised by the hardworking members of the Croatian Folkloric Group Brisbane – Dukati, this vibrant gathering consistently draws close to 500 attendees of all ages. They come together for an unforgettable evening filled with music, dance, traditional cuisine, and heartfelt camaraderie.

Held at the Croatian Community Centre in Rocklea, the event attracts not only local families but guests from across Queensland and interstate. Visitors come from Wollongong, Sydney, and Melbourne. Upon arrival, they are welcomed with the nostalgic aromas of roasted chestnuts, corn, kranjske kobasice, and warm mulled wine. It is a sensory experience that immediately evokes the spirit of a traditional Croatian village festival.

A Village Festival in the Heart of Brisbane

Outside, the grounds are alive with activity. Football matches entertain sports lovers, while hay bales, crackling fires, and a Croatian market create a warm, rustic setting. Stalls offer everything from iconic ‘Startas’ shoes and Croatian-themed souvenirs to merchandise supporting the folklore group.

Seljačka zabava: Where Heritage Comes to Life

Inside the venue, guests are greeted by a beautifully decorated hall. It sets the stage for an evening steeped in culture. The highlight of Seljačka zabava is always the impressive performance program delivered by all levels of HFG Brisbane – Dukati. This ranges from the youngest dancers in the ‘Mišići’ group to the experienced senior dancers. Their colourful costumes, precise choreography, and visible passion showcase months of preparation. It is a deep commitment to preserving Croatian heritage.

Guest performers from other cities often join the program, adding variety and strengthening cultural ties between communities. The night continues with live music, spirited dancing, and a traditional buffet dinner, blessed by clergy and shared among friends. A raffle, always a favourite, rounds out the festivities, followed by more music and dancing into the night.

The continued success of Seljačka zabava is thanks to the tireless dedication of the Dukati committee, countless volunteers, talented performers, and the generous support of sponsors and community partners.
