A blustery and wet winter night in Canberra couldn’t keep the crowd away from the Croatian Deakin Soccer Club for the 2021 Trivia Night fundraiser hosted by HFS Croatia’s senior group last Friday night
With 18 teams registered, the room was buzzing in expectation. The competition was always going to be hotly contested and it was game on!
Hosted by senior group’s very own Maja Barašić & Ariana Jurković, Trivia Night was underway. Having also put together the questions, Maja and Ariana made sure there was a category for everyone from general knowledge to sport, history, geography, music, Croatia and pop culture. Even after being challenged that Australia really is a continent although Google thinks it’s Oceania, they adjudicated with style and grace and made sure everything ran smoothly.
With lots of laughter, banter and friendly sledging across tables, teams such as ‘Kriza’, ‘Smokva’, ‘Pamet u glavu’, ‘The pink ladies’, ‘Ko-kolo’, ‘Je**te’ ‘Friday Night Fever’ and ‘South East Croatians’, deliberated over answers and which opposition team members to put in jail.
Maintaining order were police women, Lela Vidaković and Savannah Pirjac, ready with hand cuffs and pistols to put people in jail. At times they struggled to keep up with demand, often releasing prisoners only to have them re-offend.
With regular updates on progress scores, momentum was building and there was even strong competition as raffle prizes were called out. So much so, that winners ended up sharing their prizes (namely Karlovačko and Višnjevac) with other teams.
After seven rounds of fun – the results were in! From bottom to top, the first team announced were the ‘Courageous Cats’ who were courageous and meowed into wooden spoon place. As team placements were called out, tension grew, it came down to the last two teams and a draw for first place!
‘Trivial Pršut’ and ‘Stara Koka Dobra Juha’ played off in a tie-break and were inseparable two questions later. So, finally, it came down to a simple flip of a coin with ‘Trivial Pršut’ victorious, and taking out the title for 2021.
It was a great night for all, wonderfully organised by HFS Croatia’s senior group and led by their president Ante Jurković. A big thank you was extended to all the raffle prize sponsors, particularly Croatian Deakin Soccer Club who donated the first prize and the hall for the evening.
It was a night not only of Trivial but a night that provided a sense of community, connection and friendship. We all now can’t wait for next year!
