ROUND 1: North Geelong Warriors Secure Late Draw in Thrilling Derby

In a pulsating Victorian Premier League encounter, North Geelong Warriors demonstrated their fighting spirit by salvaging a 2-2 draw against local rivals Geelong SC in front of a passionate crowd at Winslow Park.

The Warriors, who are looking to bounce straight back to the topflight following their relegation in 2024, couldn’t have asked for a better start to the match. Casian Anghel found the back of the net in just the third minute, silencing the home supporters and setting the tone for what would become a memorable derby.

However, the hosts gradually worked their way back into the contest and were rewarded for their persistence in the 33rd minute when they drew level. The equaliser sparked renewed energy from both sides, with several chances created before the half-time whistle blew with the scores locked at 1-1.

The second half proved to be an even more dramatic affair. Tommy Josifovski, Geelong SC’s goalkeeper, produced a moment of brilliance with a spectacular penalty save that kept his team in the contest. The match also saw several disallowed goals adding to the tension and controversy that typically characterises these fierce local derbies.

Geelong SC thought they had done enough to secure all three points when they took the lead in the 75th minute, sending their supporters into raptures. However, the Warriors showed tremendous resilience and refused to accept defeat. Their persistence paid off when Sonny Brimmer emerged as the hero, scoring the equaliser with just five minutes remaining on the clock.

The 2-2 result ensures both teams take away a point from this thoroughly entertaining encounter. North Geelong Warriors will look to build on this performance when they return to action this Saturday, February 15th, hosting Box Hill United at their home ground. Kick-off is scheduled for 17:00.
