For the first time, the Croatian Cultural Society of New Zealand held a ‘Food Truck Festa’ on 22nd March 2025. It was conceived as an open day at the club which promoted Croatian culture, gastronomy and, above all, hospitality in a special way. With this event, they hosted more than 2,000 visitors!

It was a huge success in Te AtatÅ« featuring delicious food from around the world, market stalls, entertainment, and children’s games. The event was crowned with a spirit of community. It aimed to increase the visibility of the club, engage with the local community, and promote Croatian culture and cuisine to a wider audience.

“These events are vital for keeping Croatian culture alive and meaningful for our younger generations, fostering genuine pride in their heritage,” Joseph Erceg explained. “Without maintaining our visibility and presence in community conversations, we risk seeing our cherished traditions gradually disappear from the lives of diaspora children. This successful event helps prevent that cultural fading.”

Croatian specialities, ćevapi, macaroni, and dumplings were just part of the diverse offering. Visitors also enjoyed stalls from Croatian wineries that played a key role in the development of New Zealand’s wine industry. They had the opportunity to tour the club premises and learn more about the club’s activities.

“Entertainment and games were in full swing throughout the afternoon, with music creating atmosphere. The kolo performed by our dancers and orchestra gave a special traditional touch. Families enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. Many first-time visitors were impressed with the club’s facilities. They wondered why such an event had never been held before,” says Joseph about the event that will certainly secure its place in Auckland’s calendar of events.

“The surprising success of the Food Truck Festa highlights the importance of events that bring people together, adopt modern food trends and events, celebrate heritage, and strengthen community bonds. With such a positive response, the Croatian Cultural Society looks forward to hosting similar events,” concludes Joseph Erceg.
