This year’s Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day, the Day of Croatian Defenders, and the 30th anniversary of Operation Storm were events I simply could not miss. I set off for Knin not only to mark this important day for our homeland but also to reunite with a dear friend – Miroslav Škoro.
The spirit of celebration in Knin
Knin was already in full celebration mode when I arrived. The atmosphere was incredible. People of all generations had taken to the streets since early morning, draped in Croatian flags, holding banners, and singing patriotic songs. The weight and significance of the day could be felt at every step. Flags hung from nearly every building, and a sense of national pride was everywhere.
The town, which holds a uniquely symbolic place in Croatian history due to its liberation during Operation Storm, carried even greater significance this year. The thirtieth anniversary wasn’t just a historical number – it was an opportunity for unity, remembrance, and renewed hope. I was happy and proud to be there.
The group “Hrvatske ruže” brilliantly warmed up the crowd, performing several of Thompson’s hits that lifted the mood to a new level. The crowd sang in unison, clapped, and created the impression that the entire square was breathing as one.
When Škoro arrived, he was immediately taken to a few media obligations, but we managed to steal a few minutes for a quick chat before his performance. We spoke about the significance of the day and how much it still means to Croats, both at home and around the world. He told me that “he feels a new energy has awakened among the Croatian people,” and mentioned how touched he was by the reaction to his new song “Zastava”. And truly – when he performed it, the entire square exploded, and thousands of flags waved in rhythm with the chorus.
A message to the diaspora
Škoro also sent heartfelt greetings to Croats in Australia, saying he hasn’t forgotten them and values their continued support. He also hinted at the possibility of an Australian tour – it’s been 13 years since the last one! We’re hoping for the best.
A concert to remember
The concert itself was spectacular. We had backstage access and a perfect view as Škoro delivered a two-hour concert full of emotion and patriotism. Songs like “Mata” and “Sude mi” had the crowd singing along, and flares were lit at the start of almost every song. Even when there was a brief power outage – the audience kept singing.
It was an evening of pride, unity, and immense emotion. An evening I won’t forget for a long time. And as for that Australian tour? Stay tuned…
