Walnut vs. Poppy Seed

The sweet debate of Croatian Easter desserts traditions

by Suzana Fantov

Orahnjača (walnut roll) or makovnjača (poppy seed roll)?

In a light-hearted online poll that captured the attention—and appetites—of many Croatians, a delicious debate has unfolded: which traditional Easter desserts do people prefer, the beloved orahnjača (walnut roll) or its close cousin, the makovnjača (poppy seed roll)? Though both sweet rolls hold a cherished place in Croatian culture, especially during Easter celebrations, the walnut roll has emerged as the winner in this friendly face-off.

The poll, shared widely across social media platforms, drew hundreds of comments from passionate food lovers. While the votes leaned in favor of the walnut roll, many users admitted that choosing between the two was no easy task. “They’re both staples on our holiday table,” one user wrote, “it just wouldn’t be Easter without both on the platter as we present our Easter desserts.”

A Slice of Tradition

These rich, rolled pastries are more than just dessert—they’re a taste of heritage. The preparation of orahnjača and makovnjača is often a family affair, passed down through generations. Each roll starts with a soft, yeasted dough that’s lovingly spread with either a sweet walnut or poppy seed filling. It is then tightly rolled and baked to golden perfection, making them both staple Easter desserts.

Traditionally made during Easter and Christmas, these rolls symbolise comfort, celebration, and the warmth of home. Grandmothers across Croatia are known for having their own “secret” recipes. Some add a touch of rum, a hint of lemon zest, or even a spoonful of jam to make the filling extra moist and flavourful.

A Close Contest

While both desserts have their die-hard fans, the walnut roll took the crown in this informal online contest. Its slightly sweet, nutty flavour and creamy texture seem to appeal to a broader range of palates. “There’s something about the taste of walnuts that just reminds me of my childhood Easters,” one voter shared.

Still, the poppy seed roll held its own, with many praising its unique taste and deep-rooted tradition. “My family always made makovnjača,” said another commenter, “it’s a bit more intense in flavour, but that’s what makes it special and an indispensable part of our Easter desserts.”

Sweet harmony

In the end, the poll revealed less of a rivalry and more of a shared love for tradition and flavor. Most voters agreed: why choose one when you can have both Easter desserts?

So this Easter, whether you slice into the nutty richness of a warm walnut roll or enjoy the delicate crunch of a poppy seed swirl, one thing is clear—Croatia’s sweet traditions are alive, well, and very much loved when it comes to Easter desserts.
