Friday evenings in many Croatian clubs and communities across Australia hold a special meaning – it’s fish night! Whether it’s grilled snapper sizzling on the barbecue or stuffed capsicums served with creamy mashed potatoes, one thing is certain: the flavours of home and the spirit of togetherness are shared across the table. This happens no matter how far from the Adriatic we are.
Geelong – the heart of the community for 38 years

The Croatian Community Centre in Geelong (172–180 Cox Rd, Corio) has been a vibrant hub for generations. Traditional Friday fish nights bring people together for decades. This year marks their 38th anniversary – since opening its doors on 25 April 1987, the centre has been a second home to many. They celebrate weddings, baptisms, anniversaries or simply life itself. Fish Fridays have become a cherished tradition. For bookings, call 0431 882 870.
Dandenong City SC – fish, calamari, sarma and the grill

At the 41 Baden Powell Drive, in Endeavour Hills, there’s something for every taste. Friday menus feature freshly grilled snapper and calamari, as well as hearty favourites like sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls). They also offer steaks and mixed grills. A true feast!
Gwelup Croatia SC – Western Australia’s love for grilled seafood

At the Croatian House Gwelup (18 Wishart St, Gwelup, WA), just 12km from Perth, regular fish nights are served with generous buffets. There is top-notch preparation by Jure Denona and the kitchen crew. These nights are more than just dinner – they often double as fundraisers that support the community.
North Fremantle – fish dinners with the Western Knights

The Croatian Social Centre on Alfred Road in North Fremantle is home to the ever-popular fish nights. Lovers of seafood and sports come together, particularly the devoted members of the Western Knights Football Club.
AHD Geelong – classic Adriatic-style fish on the grill

At 93–109 Separation Street, Geelong, AHD Geelong offers traditional grilled fish every Good Friday. They create an atmosphere reminiscent of the old country. Fish and seafood dishes also make regular appearances on their usual menu throughout the year.
Croatian Sports Centre Adelaide – fish and homegrown olive oil

At 61 Anna Meares Way, Adelaide, the fish is grilled with love – and seasoned with olive oil from the centre’s own trees! A word of advice from the hosts: whole snapper is served on a ‘first come – first served’ basis. It sells out quickly. If you want to enjoy a perfectly cooked snapper straight off the coals – arrive early!
Croatian Club Adelaide – a full table and homemade cakes

Located at 15 Wood Avenue, Brompton, the Croatian Club Adelaide invites everyone to enjoy a Friday night full of traditional flavours. Alongside fish, guests can enjoy stuffed capsicum with mash, ćevapi, and other classic Croatian dishes. These are topped off with homemade cakes. All ingredients are sourced from loyal South Australian producers.
In conclusion, fish nights in Croatian clubs across Australia are more than just a meal – they’re a cultural link, a social occasion, and a chance to reconnect with old friends. It’s an opportunity to make new memories. On Friday nights, somewhere between sarma and snapper, you’ll find a little taste of Croatia – served warm on your plate.
These are the places we’ve received recommendations for and personally visited. However, if you know of a spot within the Croatian community where fish is served on Fridays, let us know!
