Bring back Miss Croatia in Australia

In the rich history of the Croatian-Australian community, one of the most memorable and heartfelt events was undoubtedly the Miss Croatia in Australia pageant. This tradition was much more than a beauty contest – it was a reflection of cultural pride, unity, and the dedicated efforts of young Croatian women who, through their involvement in Croatian clubs and organisations, became true role models in their communities.

More Than Beauty – A Symbol of Commitment and Identity

The Miss Croatia selection was traditionally held as part of the annual Australian-Croatian Soccer Tournaments, hosted in various cities across the country. Each Croatian club would select a representative – a young woman not only admired for her looks, but also for her dedication, voluntary work, and active involvement in the Croatian community.

As one community member beautifully described it:
“Miss Croatia is not just a beautiful girl. Miss Croatia is someone involved in the life and work of the Croatian community both before and after the pageant. She is intelligent, kind, and respectful to others.”

These women were not just standing on stage – they were mentors and inspirations to younger generations. Many of them played in women’s soccer teams, helped organise cultural events, volunteered tirelessly, and worked to preserve Croatian heritage across Australia.

Gala Evenings That Celebrated Beauty and Togetherness

The gala evenings where Miss Croatia was crowned were truly unforgettable – filled with pride, emotion, and joy. These events brought together Croatians from all corners of Australia and served as celebrations of Croatian beauty, talent, and character. Contestants were ambitious, well-educated, hardworking, and deeply connected to their roots – all of which made the title of Miss Croatia even more special.

Unfortunately, over time, fewer young women applied, and this beautiful tradition gradually faded. Nevertheless, the memories remain alive in the hearts of many.

Marry Ann Kožnjak – A Community’s Pride

One of the most shining moments for the Croatian community in Australia occurred in 1983, when Marry Ann Kožnjak, a young Croatian woman from Canberra, was crowned Miss Australia. She had first earned the title of Miss NSW, and later captured the nation’s heart. As reported in the Australian press at the time, she was “the most beautiful, most charming, and most modest Miss the fifth continent had ever seen.”

Her crown was presented by the legendary John Bertrand, skipper of Australia II, the yacht that famously won the America’s Cup. In her emotional acceptance speech, Marry Ann said:

“I am proud and grateful to all Croatians and Croatian communities in Australia who supported me in any way. I am honoured that a Croatian girl has been chosen as Miss Australia, and I hope that next year another Croatian will be just as lucky. Thank you to the Croatians of Mt Gambier – thank you all!”

A Symbol of Identity for the Community

The Miss Croatia pageant held deep significance for the Croatian community in Australia – it symbolised pride, unity, and the preservation of national identity among young people. Through this tradition, we showed that true beauty comes from within – from a love of heritage, a desire to preserve culture, and a willingness to give back to the community.

Today, as we look back on those events and the remarkable young women who took part, we remember a time when unity and identity were celebrated through smiles, pride, and effort. Perhaps these memories will spark a renewed interest – because every community thrives through its traditions, and Miss Croatia in Australia was truly one that brought people together and inspired many.
