Matthew JURČEVIĆ

On the sunny afternoon of 18th January 2025, the Croatian community of Western Australia came together to mark the 33rd anniversary of Croatian International Recognition Day. The event, held at the Croatian House in Gwelup, was a resounding success, blending cultural pride, delicious cuisine, and spirited football matches to unite attendees in celebration.

The festivities commenced at 1 pm, with a formal opening in the main hall of Croatian House. Distinguished guests graced the occasion, including Stuart Aubrey, Member for Scarborough; Damien Kelly, Liberal representative for Scarborough; Stirling Council Councillors Toni Krstičević and Karlo Perkov; Mayor of Stirling Council Mark Irwin; Anthony Sumich, President of the North Fremantle Croatian Community Centre; Dean Zlendić, President of the Western Knights Soccer Club; and Perth Glory CEO Anthony Radich. Their presence underscored the importance of this annual celebration to the broader community.

After an inspiring welcome address by Mark Irwin and Croatian House Gwelup’s Laura Denona, the crowd joined in a moment of spiritual reflection as Velečasni Nikola Čabraja, a Croatian priest, delivered a heartfelt blessing. This solemn moment set the tone for the afternoon’s communal meal. The culinary offerings were a feast for the senses, featuring traditional Croatian delicacies that delighted every palate. From warm plates of sarma and succulent cevapi to lamb roasted on a spit, the menu was a testament to Croatia’s rich gastronomic heritage. Guests also indulged in an array of Croatian-style tortes, cakes, and biscuits, which added a sweet note to the gathering.

As the sun began to dip, the focus shifted to the football field, where friendly yet competitive matches brought the community together. At 4 pm, the reserve teams of Gwelup Croatia and Western Knights faced off in a spirited game that concluded with a decisive 5-1 victory for Western Knights. The excitement continued into the evening with the first teams of both clubs taking to the pitch at 6 pm. In a thrilling match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats, Western Knights narrowly defeated Gwelup Croatia 4-3.

Despite the losses for the home team, the atmosphere remained jubilant, and attendees lingered well into the night, sharing stories, laughter, and camaraderie. The celebration extended until midnight, a testament to the enduring bonds within the Croatian community.

The 33rd Anniversary of Croatian International Recognition Day was more than just a day of remembrance; it was a vibrant affirmation of cultural identity, community spirit, and the shared joy of coming together. As attendees departed, many carried with them not only full hearts but also a renewed sense of pride in their heritage and the promise of future celebrations to come.
