Sydney United 58 secured their place in the Hahn Australia Cup Round of 16 with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Northern Tigers last night at Leichhardt Oval, a match defined by intensity, resilience and a moment of brilliance from Luke Zuvela.
In a tightly contested battle, both teams came out firing, determined to take control. The breakthrough came just before the halftime whistle, when Zuvela rose above the pack to head home what proved to be the decisive goal.
“It’s a great feeling and a high we deserve as a group and as a club,” said Zuvela after the match. “We’re right where we want and need to be and are pushing for more.”
Midfielder Carlos De Oliveira shared similar sentiments about the result and its significance for the squad.
“Wow, what a feeling it is to get the win and progress into the Round of 16. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but the boys stuck through and it showed in the result today. We know how much it means to the club, and we deserve this, now we get to showcase our football on a national level.”

Sydney United 58 created several opportunities throughout the match but were also forced to defend deep in the closing stages as the Tigers pushed hard for an equaliser.
Yet United’s composure and defensive strength shone through, holding their nerve until the final whistle.
As the team celebrated with their loyal fans, chanting “Sydney Croatia,” the bond between players, supporters, and heritage was unmistakable.
The post-match scenes reflected a deep sense of unity and pride that continues to define this storied club.
Inside the change room, the mood was electric. “The atmosphere is great amongst the boys,” Zuvela shared.
“We’re celebrating well. We know how much this Cup means to us, and we’re keen to turn up every game we get.”
De Oliveira added, “The atmosphere in here is unbelievable. Everyone’s smiling, happy, excited and this is why we play the game. It’s games like that that show the true joys of footballers. To see our change room like that, it’s a great scene and shows how close this group is.”

For Zuvela, the goal carried personal weight. “It means more than words can describe. From watching to playing, I’m just so happy I could help the boys and the team progress.”
Looking ahead, United will shift their focus back to league fixtures before preparing for their next Cup challenge.
“We’ll be level-headed,” said Zuvela. “There’s more to chase in the league, but when the Cup game comes around again, I’m sure no motivation will be needed.”
Zuvela also praised head coach Ante Juric’s influence leading into the match. “He mentioned a lot of important things, teamwork, being a close group of lads. He shared some personal stories that sit close to his heart. It helped all of us realise why we go out there, and who we play for.”
Sydney United’s victory is more than just a step forward in the Cup, it’s a reflection of their ambition, unity, and a squad fully committed to the journey ahead.
